David, Aaron, Felicity and Rob paddled the Whanganui river from Whakahoro to Pipiriki on a 4-day guided tour run by Canoe Safaris and experienced guide Canon. The weather was hot but frequent swims kept us cool. The trip, run by Canoe Safaris, included boats, life-jackets, tents and food and 3 nights camping at riverside campsites. We were shown the best paddling techniques and the safest way to negotiate the many small rapids. Paddling through the setting of the 2005 movie “River Queen” and side trips, took us up to an abandoned farmstead and to the historic “Bridge to Nowhere” built in 1936 and abandoned soon after. We took on the rapid known as the 50:50 (the chance of making it through the right way up) and with a proud Thumbs-Up proved the statistics wrong while witnessing others not so lucky!
